Steven Conaway
became the Executive Director of RAFT on January 15, 2024, after the founder, Ruth Fletcher-Carter, retired. Steven started his career in the entertainment industry, performing across the US and the world from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. After retiring from show business, he began working as a school bus driver in Clark County, Nevada. Over 22 years, he was promoted to Transportation Investigator for 7 years and Operations Manager for 8 years. His duties included investigating accidents, training, ensuring legal compliance, supervising employees, managing logistics, and overseeing daily operations. By the time he retired, the transportation department had over 5 bus yards, 1,700 school buses, and more than 1,800 staff. In January 2020, Steven moved to Loveland and started driving a bus for the Thompson School District. Within 6 months, he was promoted to manager/supervisor and further focused his passion for transportation by joining the RAFT Board of Directors. In late 2022, Steven applied for RAFT’s first salaried position as a part-time operations assistant and was hired. Conaway resigned his RAFT Board seat and left the school district to implement growth strategies for RAFT. Conaway helped to implement technology, improve communication, and expand staff and partnerships. As Executive Director, Steven aims to expand RAFT’s foundation, operations, and funding to create the best transportation service for Berthoud. He believes that “without transportation, there is no freedom or choice.”
